Juventus beaten at Atletico to leave Ronaldo on brink of Champions League exit

(CNN)Cristiano Ronaldo was supposed to be the final piece in the Juventus Champions League winning jigsaw. Follow @cnnsport Only Sevilla (27) and Getafe (23) have conceded more goals to Ronaldo than Atletico Madrid. Yet, on a Wednesday night in Madrid, the city where he enjoyed such success with Real, he was unable to add to his career tally of 22 against the former neighbor. For Atletico Madrid, a team that has felt the full force of Ronaldo’s irrepressible scoring record during his time at Real, this 2-0 victory in the first leg of the last 16 tie was particularly sweet. Two second-half goals from Uruguayan defensive duo Jose Gimenez and Diego Godin secured the advantage for Diego Simeone’s side. READ: …

Nike’s ad turns a sexist trope on its head by celebrating ambitious, ‘crazy’ women.

Nike’s latest ad challenges a common sexist trope in sports—and people are loving it. Women have fought for decades to be seen as legitimate competitors in male-dominated fields, including professional and amateur sports. Until the early 20th century, many believed that women were not biologically designed for strenuous exercise (a myth that was ultimately debunked by a female physician, Dr. Celia Duel Mosher). And it wasn’t that long ago that showing intense emotion and too much ambition could land a woman in an asylum. Throughout history, women who tried to compete at a high level were seen as “crazy.” Sadly, too often, they still are. Nike took on gender bias in sports in its latest ad, and the result is …

I said ‘well luckily that’s not difficult’.” Image copyright Getty Images Image caption Baroness Brady, Lord Sugar and Nick Hewer with a Bafta award for their work on The Apprentice Despite decades of work in the football industry, Lady Brady …

Martina Navratilova dropped by LGBT group over trans athletes row

(CNN)An LGBT group has cut ties with tennis great Martina Navratilova after she said it was a form of “cheating” for transgender women to be allowed to compete in women’s sport. “Trans women are women, period. They did not decide their gender identity any more than someone decides to be gay, or to have blue eyes,” the group added. “They are women, and want to compete in the sport they love, just as any other athlete would.” The move follows a flurry of criticism directed at Navratilova, a gay rights campaigner who herself suffered homophobic abuse when she came out in 1981, for her Sunday Times column. Navratilova, who competed for Czechoslovakia and the United States, wrote that “it would …

How the daredevil sport of parkour can help aging adults fall better

(CNN)It looks like something out of a ninja movie. The extreme sport known as parkour involves vaulting high obstacles, leaping from rooftop to rooftop and literally bouncing off the walls. “Older adults who do fall sometimes experience an injury,” said Kathy Cameron, director of the National Fall Prevention Resource Center. “About 20% of those who fall have an injury like traumatic brain injury or a hip fracture or other broken bones.” But it’s not just the bodily injuries that make falling so harmful. The simple fear of falling makes some older people eschew physical activity. And that, ironically, can lead to greater falling risks. “Physical activity is one of the prime ways that we can prevent falls,” Cameron said. “Exercise …

Chelsea handed transfer ban by FIFA

(CNN)English Premier League side Chelsea has been banned by world governing body FIFA from signing players for the next two transfer windows. The statement from FIFA also declared that Chelsea “committed several other infringements relating to registration requirements for players.” It added that the club had “breached article 18bis of the Regulations in connection with two agreements it concluded concerning minors and which allowed it to influence other clubs in transfer-related matters.” Chelsea’s women’s and futsal teams are not covered by the ban, while it also does not affect the release of players from their contracts. Zlatan Ibrahimovic: ‘Now I just go out on the field and dominate’

(CNN)Is it possible that the iconic American school bus ultimately inspired Swedish football icon Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s move to the US? “And when I got the opportunity, I took it immediately, because I saw it as a great chance for me, for my career and for the life outside the field.” Never a truer word spoken, as so often seems to be the case with the enigmatic Swedish star. But while the legendary Zlatan has won almost every honor in the game — it is perhaps easier to list the trophies he did not lift for his clubs, such as the Champions League and English Premier League — he surely will not settle for another season of mediocrity in L.A., where …
